How to Make Big Decisions

Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying.… These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. (Acts 1:12-14)

Are you good at making important decisions? In Acts 1, the disciples had a big decision to make. They understood from the Scriptures that it was proper to replace Judas, the disgraced one who betrayed Jesus and then killed himself. But exactly who should replace Judas and fulfill his office? The steps they took in Acts 1:12-14 give us an example to follow before we make important decisions.

Making Big Decisions

First, notice their obedience: Then they returned to Jerusalem. Just before He was carried up to heaven, Jesus told them to return to Jerusalem and wait for the coming of the Holy Spirit. That is exactly what they did. Sometimes we hear God speak to us in through His word, but we quickly forget it. Many a good sermon has been lost on the walk from the church to the parking lot! But here the disciples did what Jesus told them to do, even though He was no longer physically present with them. If we want to make the right decisions, it begins with being obedient right now with what we know to be God’s will.

Second, notice their unity: These all continued with one accord. When we saw the disciples in the gospels, it seemed they were always fighting and bickering. What changed? Peter still had his history of denying Jesus, Matthew was still a former tax collector, and Simon was still a zealot. Their differences were still there, but the resurrected Jesus in their hearts was greater than any of their differences. When we seek God about a big decision, a lack of unity with our brothers and sisters in Jesus can really get in the way. Being out of fellowship – either through our absence or through bad relationship – puts us in a bad place for decision making.

Finally, notice their prayer:  These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication. They all prayed, and they continued in prayer and supplication. The idea of the word supplication is a sense of desperation and earnestness in prayer. Prayer showed that they depended on God and the depth of their prayer showed the depth of their dependence. God honors it when we deeply depend on Him; it is another way

There is obviously more than these three parts to making good, godly decisions; but these three things give us an essential foundation: obedience, unity, and prayer. Now is the time to give attention to these three areas, before you might find yourself needing to make a big decision. If you are in a decision time right now, then don’t wait – give attention to obedience, unity, and prayer.

Y habiendo dicho estas cosas, viéndolo ellos, fue alzado, y le recibió una nube que le ocultó de sus ojos. Y estando ellos con los ojos puestos en el cielo, entre tanto que él se iba, he aquí se pusieron junto a ellos dos varones con vestiduras blancas, los cuales también les dijeron: Varones galileos, ¿por qué estáis mirando al cielo? Este mismo Jesús, que ha sido tomado de vosotros al cielo, así vendrá como le habéis visto ir al cielo. (Hechos 1:9-11)

Unos 40 días después de su resurrección, Jesús reunió a sus discípulos en el monte de los Olivos y les dijo que fueran testigos de Él en toda la tierra. Al terminar ese importante y último mandato, Jesús hizo algo extraordinario. Su cuerpo físico fue alzado al cielo, incluso cuando sus discípulos observaban. Él subió y subió hasta que desvaneció en las nubes y no se le pudo ver más.

Jesús quería que sus discípulos vieran su partida de la tierra al cielo. Leemos, viéndolo ellos, fue alzado. Para Jesús, era importante dejar a sus discípulos de esta manera. Él pudo haber desaparecido al cielo y a la presencia del Padre de una manera secreta. Pero Jesús quería que sus seguidores supieran que se había ido para siempre, a diferencia de la manera en la que apareció y reapareció durante los 40 días posteriores a su resurrección.

Jesús les dijo a los discípulos que les convenía que Él se fuera porque les mandaría al Espíritu Santo (Juan 16:7). Ahora los discípulos podían saber que esa promesa se cumpliría. El Espíritu Santo venía porque Jesús prometió enviar el Espíritu después de irse, y la ascensión fue la manera en demostrar que Jesús realmente se había ido.

Mientras los discípulos veían al cielo, dos varones –ángeles– preguntaron: ¿por qué estáis mirando al cielo? Les dijeron a los discípulos que se enfocaran en lo que Jesús les dijo que hicieran, no en dónde y cómo se había ido Jesús.

Los dos varones se refirieron a Jesús como este mismo Jesús. Esto nos recuerda que el Jesús que ascendió al cielo y está sentado a la diestra de Dios el Padre es el mismo Jesús del Evangelio. Es el mismo Jesús de amor, gracia, bondad, sabiduría y cuidado. El Jesús en el cielo es este mismo Jesús.

Luego, también prometieron algo maravilloso: Jesús vendrá como le habéis visto ir al cielo. Este Jesús regresará tal como se fue.

– Él se fue físicamente y vendrá como le habéis visto ir.
– Él se fue visiblemente y vendrá como le habéis visto ir.
– Él se fue del monte de los Olivos y vendrá como le habéis visto ir.
– Él se fue en presencia de sus discípulos y vendrá como le habéis visto ir.
– Él se fue bendiciendo a Su pueblo (Lucas 24:50-51) y vendrá como le habéis visto ir.

Und als sie unverwandt zum Himmel blickten, während er dahinfuhr, siehe, da standen zwei Männer in weißer Kleidung bei ihnen, die sprachen: Ihr Männer von Galiläa, was steht ihr hier und seht zum Himmel? Dieser Jesus, der von euch weg in den Himmel aufgenommen worden ist, wird in derselben Weise wiederkommen, wie ihr ihn habt in den Himmel auffahren sehen!(Apostelgeschichte 1,9-11)

Ca. 40 Tage nach Seiner Auferstehung versammelte Jesus Seine Jünger am Ölberg und sagte ihnen, dass sie Seine Zeugen auf der ganzen Welt sein sollten. Nach diesem wichtigen und letzten Gebot tat Jesus etwas Bemerkenswertes. Sein Körper wurde in den Himmel gehoben, während Seine Jünger zusahen. Er stieg höher und höher, immer weiter, bis Er in den Wolken verschwand und sie Ihn nicht mehr sehen konnten.

Jesus wollte, dass Seine Jünger Seinen Abgang von der Erde sahen. Wir lesen, er wurde vor ihren Augen emporgehoben. Es war wichtig für Jesus, Seine Jünger auf diese Art und Weise zu verlassen. Er hätte theoretisch natürlich einfach verschwinden können und auf geheimnisvolle Weise in den Himmel und in die Gegenwart des Vaters zurückkehren können. Doch Jesus wollte, dass Seine Nachfolger sehen konnten, dass Er nicht mehr wiederkommen würde, anders als in den 40 Tagen nach Seine Auferstehung, wo Er immer mal wieder erschien.

Jesus sagte Seinen Jüngern, dass es besser sei, wenn Er weggeht, denn Er würde dann den Heiligen Geist schicken (Johannes 16,7). Nun konnten die Jünger erfahren, dass sich diese Verheißung erfüllte. Der Heilige Geist kam, denn Jesus hatte versprochen, Ihn zu schicken, wenn Er ging. Und als Er in den Himmel aufstieg, zeigte Jesus damit, dass Er nun wirklich weg war.

Während die Jünger in den Himmel starrten, wurden sie von zwei Männern – offensichtlich Engel – gefragt: was steht ihr hier und seht zum Himmel? Sie sagten den Jüngern, dass sie sich auf das konzentrieren sollten, was Jesus ihnen gesagt hatte, und sich nicht fragen sollte, wohin Jesus gegangen war.

Die zwei Männer nannten Christus dieser Jesus. Das bedeutet, dass der Jesus, der in den Himmel aufstieg und zur Rechten des Vaters sitzt, derselbe Jesus des Evangeliums ist. Er ist derselbe Jesus der Liebe, Gnade, Güte, Weisheit und Fürsorge. Der Jesus im Himmel ist dieser Jesus.

Dann fügten sie noch ein wunderbares Versprechen hinzu: Dieser Jesus, der von euch weg in den Himmel aufgenommen worden ist, wird in derselben Weise wiederkommen, wie ihr ihn habt in den Himmel auffahren sehen! Dieser Jesus wird genauso wiederkommen, wie Er ging.

  • Er ging körperlich und wird in derselben Weise wiederkommen

  • Er ging sichtbar und wird in derselben Weise wiederkommen

  • Er ging vom Ölberg und wird dorthin wiederkommen

  • Er ging, als die Jünger dabei waren und wird in derselben Weise wiederkommen

  • Er ging während Er Seine Kinder segnete (Lukas 24,50-51) und wird in derselben Weise wiederkommen

Komme bald, Herr Jesus!
