Added To the Lord
Yet none of the rest dared join them, but the people esteemed them highly. And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women. (Acts 5:13-14)
Sometimes we think that when the church lives as it should, the church will be a magnet that draws all those who do not yet believe on Jesus. They will see the purity and power and holiness of God among His people and say, “I want to join with such people.”
I suppose it works like that sometimes, and in some places. But certainly not always. Here, in Acts 5:13-14 we see that when the holiness and purity of the church was evident to the world, none of the rest dared join them.
When everyone learned of how God dealt with Ananias and Sapphira, and how jealously God guarded the purity of His people, they thought twice before joining the community of God’s people. They had such a marvelous reputation for integrity that everybody knew it was a serious thing to be a follower of Jesus.
When God cleanses the church this radically, it feels painful – even traumatic. Yet, one of the good things that flows from it is that there is much less of a casual commitment among believers. People then are more likely to count the cost as Jesus said they should (Luke 14:25-33).
Despite the hesitancy of some, the church kept growing. We read, believers were increasingly added to the Lord. Though people knew it was a serious thing to be a Christian, the Spirit of God kept moving with power. More and more people joined the community of the disciples of Jesus.
In fact, they were added in multitudes. We read that they joined the disciples in multitudes of both men and women. This was Luke’s way of reminding us that the cleansing of the church connected with Ananias and Sapphira did no lasting damage. God’s work continued forward.
Notice the phrasing that the Holy Spirit chose to describe this. They were increasingly added to the Lord. This means that new believers were added, but they were added to the Lord, not primarily to a “church” or to a person or even to a movement. They were added to the Lord Jesus Himself.
Christian, please understand: your fundamental identity is who you are as someone added to the Lord Jesus.
– You have a race and an ethnicity; those are not your fundamental identity.
– You live in a nation and perhaps belong to a political party; those are not your fundamental identity.
– You have an education and some kind of economic class; those are not your fundamental identity.
– You belong to a certain church or denomination; those are not your fundamental identity.
You have been added to the Lord Jesus; you are “in Christ.” This is the greatest and most glorious identity. Rejoice in it, rest in it – and remember it is a serious thing to be among those who are added to the Lord Jesus.
Einheit – ein großes Wunder
Durch die Hände der Apostel aber geschahen viele Zeichen und Wunder unter dem Volk; und sie waren alle einmütig beisammen in der Halle Salomos. (Apostelgeschichte 5,12)
Zu dieser Zeit war die Gemeinschaft der Jünger immer noch in Jerusalem. Dort versammelten sie sich in der Halle Salomos. Diese befand sich oben am Tempelberg. Der zweite Tempel war ein massives Anwesen mit ausladenden Hallen und überdachtem Gelände. Zweifelsohne trafen sich die Christen an einem bestimmten Ort des Tempelkomplexes, der für jeden zugänglich war-
Es war eine Zeit bemerkenswerter Werke – viele Zeichen und Wunder. Es wird uns an dieser Stelle nicht gesagt, welche Zeichen und Wunder geschahen. Vermutlich waren es Dinge von denen wir an anderen Stellen in Apostelgeschichte und in den Evangelien lesen – Heilungen, Befreiung von dämonischen Mächten und andere ungewöhnliche Segnungen.
In Apostelgeschichte 4,29-30 baten die Jünger Gott darum einige Dinge zu tun: …verleihe deinen Knechten, dein Wort mit aller Freimütigkeit zu reden, 30 indem du deine Hand ausstreckst zur Heilung, und dass Zeichen und Wunder geschehen durch den Namen deines heiligen Knechtes Jesus! Gott hatte dieses Gebet erhört. Denn die Jünger hatten die Freimütigkeit Gottes Wort zu erzählen, und es geschahen viele Zeichen und Wunder durch sie. Sie baten darum im Glauben, und Gott erhörte sie.
Diese Wunder geschahen durch die Hände der Apostel. Zu jener Zeit entschied Gott, dass diese wundersamen Dinge durch die Hände der Apostel geschehen sollten, und wir lesen nichts davon, dass Gott diese Wunder durch die Hände anderer Jünger geschehen ließ. Wir müssen darauf vertrauen, dass Gott in seiner Weisheit wählt welche Hände ein Wunder herbeiführen. Hier verfolgte Gott eine bestimmte Absicht damit, dass die Wunder durch die Hände der Apostel geschahen.
Ich weiß nicht wie es dir geht, doch ich glaube, dass Gott auch heute noch Wunder tut. Ich glaube nicht, dass irgendjemand die Macht hat Wunder zu bewirken wann immer er will. Diese Macht liegt in keiner Person. Doch Gott hat die Macht Dinge zu tun, die weit über unser Verstehen und natürliche Grenzen hinaus gehen. Der Schöpfer des Gesetzes von Ursache und Wirkung kann diese Gesetze wie es ihm beliebt außer Kraft setzen.
Es ist einfach ein Wunder zu erkennen, wenn jemand geheilt oder von dämonischen Mächten befreit wurde. Doch Gott tut auch andere Wunder, die nicht so leicht als Wunder zu erkennen sind. Wir sehen in Apostelgeschichte 5,12 auch, dass sie einmütig waren. Es gab eine wundervolle Einheit unter Gottes Kindern.
Oft ist die Tatsache, dass Gottes Kinder einmütig beisammen sind eine größere Demonstration der Macht des Heiligen Geistes als jedes Zeichen und Wunder. Unsere selbstsüchtigen Herzen und sturen Einstellungen können schwerer zu bewegen sein als jeder Berg. Spaltungen unter den Gläubigen können schwerer zu heilen sein als die schlimmste Krankheit.
Glaube daran, dass Gott in seiner Weisheit Wunder geschehen lässt – aber vergiss nicht das größte Wunder: wahre Einheit unter seinen Jüngern in Jesus Christus .
Unidad – Un gran milagro
Y por la mano de los apóstoles se hacían muchas señales y prodigios en el pueblo; y estaban todos unánimes en el pórtico de Salomón (Hechos 5:12).
En este tiempo, la comunidad de los discípulos de Jesús todavía estaba centrada en Jerusalén. En esa ciudad, se reunían en el pórtico de Salomón. Esta era un área en el monte del templo. El segundo templo era un complejo enorme, con amplios pórticos y áreas cubiertas. Sin duda, los primeros cristianos se reunieron en un área particular del complejo del templo, en un área abierta para todos.
Esta fue una temporada de obras notables – muchas señales y prodigios. Aquí no se nos dice cuáles fueron estas señales y prodigios. Es de suponer que eran como las que vemos en otros lugares en Hechos y en los Evangelios: curaciones, liberación de poderes demoníacos y otras bendiciones inusuales.
En Hechos 4: 29-30, los discípulos le pidieron a Dios que hiciera algunas cosas: … concede a tus siervos que con todo denuedo hablen tu palabra, mientras extiendes tu mano para que se hagan sanidades y señales y prodigios mediante el nombre de tu santo Hijo Jesús. Vemos a Dios respondiendo poderosamente esa oración al dar a los discípulos audacia para predicar la palabra de Dios y al obrar muchas señales y prodigiosa través de los apóstoles. Pidieron con fe y Dios respondió a sus oraciones.
Estos milagros fueron hechos por la mano de los apóstoles. En ese tiempo, Dios eligió hacer estas obras milagrosas por la mano de los apóstoles y no leemos acerca de Dios haciendo estos milagros a través de las manos de otros discípulos. Debemos confiar en que Dios elige sabiamente qué manos traerán un milagro. Aquí, Dios tenía un propósito al hacerlo a través de las manos de los apóstoles.
No sé ustedes, pero yo creo que Dios todavía hace milagros en la actualidad. No creo que nadie tenga el poder de realizar milagros cuando y como quiera; ese poder no se encuentra en ninguna persona. Pero Dios tiene poder para hacer cosas que van más allá de nuestra comprensión del orden natural. El Creador de las leyes normales de causa y efecto puede suspender esas leyes de vez en cuando como le plazca.
Es fácil ver lo milagroso cuando alguien es curado o liberado del poder demoníaco. Sin embargo, Dios hace muchos otros milagros que no se reconocen tan fácilmente como milagros. También vemos esto en Hechos 5:12: y estaban todos unánimes. Había una maravillosa unidad de corazón y propósito entre el pueblo de Dios.
A menudo, el hecho de que en el pueblo de Dios sean todos unánimes es una demostración más grande del poder del Espíritu Santo que cualquier señal o maravilla. Nuestros corazones egoístas y mentes obstinadas pueden ser más difíciles de mover que cualquier montaña. Las divisiones entre creyentes pueden ser más difíciles de curar que la peor enfermedad.
Crea en Dios por los milagros que Él concederá en Su sabiduría – pero no olvide uno de los más grandes milagros: la verdadera unidad en Jesucristo entre Sus discípulos.
