The Happy River
There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God,
The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High.
God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved;
God shall help her, just at the break of dawn.
Psalm 46:4-5
I love to read the Psalms. No matter how I’m feeling or what circumstances I am in, there is a psalm to match my mood. Something here in Psalm 46 spoke to me just now.
As I write this on Monday, I know that many of you have preached and served at your local church yesterday. Many people from many backgrounds receive this email, so if you weren’t preaching in a pulpit, leading a class, or other kind of preaching and teaching service on Sunday, I think you can still benefit from the truth of Psalm 46:4-5.
The psalmist confidently declares, “There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God.” He pictured the abundant, constant provision of a river for Jerusalem. I live in Southern California where we really don’t have rivers. When I travel and see a mighty river, I’m impressed and amazed. Here the psalmist pictured a happy river for Jerusalem (the city of God).
Jerusalem does not in fact have such a river, only a few small streams. Yet the prophets anticipated the day when a mighty river would flow from the temple itself (Ezekiel 47:12, Revelation 22:1). The future reality is already in the mind of the psalmist. This river flows and makes all the city of God happy.
– The city of God is glad because life-giving water is always present in that dry, semi-arid land.
– The city of God is glad because the river has many streams, a picture perhaps connected to the rivers that watered the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:10-14).
– The city of God is glad because a river is sometimes a picture of peace (Isaiah 48:18, 66:12). The idea is that Jerusalem is in perfect peace.
– The city of God is glad because their city is secure, having one of the best defenses against an enemy besieging the city – guaranteed water.
I believe that God wants to bring blessing to your service for Him, blessing like a life-giving river. This blessing isn’t gained by working harder or doing better, but by simply believing and receiving. Under God’s grace the key to blessing is not earning and deserving, but in truly trusting Jesus and receiving.
Like this river, God wants to bring life and refreshment to you in your service to Him and His people. Like many streams, God wants to do this in many ways, perhaps some of them unexpected. Like a tranquil river, God wants to bring peace and a sense of security in Him to your ministry.
His river is happy and wonderful. Let the river of God’s blessing refresh you this Monday.

Learning and Teaching the Basics
That they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed. (Titus 2:4-5)
According to Paul’s instruction, Titus was not to make it his work to teach the young women directly. Instead, he was to equip and encourage the older women to teach the young women. Of course, this doesn’t mean that the young women were barred from listening to Titus teach. It simply means that it was wrong – and perhaps risky – for Titus to make the young women a focus of his ministry. If there was a young women Bible Study group, Titus shouldn’t teach it. The older women should teach and encourage the younger women in some rather basic things.
We shouldn’t assume that Paul thought that these were the only things that the young women needed to know, but these were important. What were those things?
– That they should love their husbands and be obedient to their own husbands.
– That they should love their children.
– That they should be discreet, chaste, homemakers, and good.
Instruction for the young women was to begin with home matters. God has given them a strategic position of influence and assistance to their husbands and their children, and they must let love dominate their influence and assistance.
That seems pretty basic – but there is an important lesion even in that. More people than we think need to be taught the basics. We often assume that everyone grows up learning how to do these things, we many people (or even most people) do not.
We should not say, “I know how to do those things. I really don’t have anything to learn.” There may be important aspects of family life or other life basics that we haven’t learned or haven’t learned correctly. We may have bad habits of thinking or doing that need to change and brought under God’s wisdom.
We don’t only look at what we need to learn; we should also look at who we could teach. Perhaps God has put people in your circle of influence that you can teach in some basic things of life. There are people who need to learn about godly family life and the kind of habits that build a happy life. Don’t just assume that everyone knows those things. You might be the one to help them.
These basics are important for us to learn, know, and teach – so that the word of God may not be blasphemed. When Christians don’t live in a Biblical, godly manner it means that the word of God might be blasphemed among the ungodly.

Das Werk des Teufels tun
Dass sich die alten Frauen gleicherweise so verhalten sollen, wie es Heiligen geziemt, dass sie nicht verleumderisch sein sollen, nicht vielem Weingenuss ergeben, sondern solche, die das Gute lehren, damit sie die jungen Frauen dazu anleiten, ihre Männer und Kinder zu lieben. (Titus 2,3-4)
In diesem Abschnitt des Briefes von Paulus an Titus schreibt der Apostel, wie sein jüngerer Mitarbeiter mit bestimmten Menschen unter den Christen der Gemeinden auf Kreta umgehen sollte. Er sagte in etwa dies: „Bedenke dies, wenn du mit älteren Männern zu tun hast. Bedenke jenes, wenn du mit älteren Frauen zu tun hast. Bedenke das, wenn du mit jüngeren Männern zu tun hast und solches, wenn du mit jüngeren Frauen zu tun hast.“
In diesem Abschnitt geht es um die älteren Frauen und Paulus sagte, dass Titus auf folgendes achten sollte, da ältere Frauen mit eigenen Versuchungen und Möglichkeiten zu tun haben.
Dass sie sich so verhalten sollen, wie es Heiligen geziemt und verleumderisch sein sollen: Das Verhalten bezieht sich hier auf ihre Kleidung und wie sie sich selbst präsentieren. Es war wichtig, dass die älteren Frauen mit ihren Leben und Worten (nicht verleumderisch) ein gutes Beispiel waren.
Nicht vielem Weingenuss ergeben: In der römischen und griechischen Kultur war dies bei den älteren Frauen häufig der Fall. Paulus hatte erkannt, dass diese spezielle Herausforderung spezielle Instruktionen erforderte. Eigentlich sagte Paulus hier sogar, dass sie keine „Sklaven des Weines“ sein sollten. Ganz schnell kann das, was wie eine unschuldige Freiheit erscheint, uns versklaven.
Die das Gute lehren: Wenn ältere Frauen sich besonderen Herausforderungen stellen müssen, haben sie aber auch besondere Möglichkeiten. Gott kann ihre Weisheit und ihre Erfahrungen nutzen, wenn sie die jungen Frauen anleiten. Das gibt den älteren Frauen etwasPositives, das sie anstreben sollen und spricht nicht nur negative Sachen an wie ein unangemessener Lebensstil, Gerede und Alkoholmissbrauch.
Die Instruktion, auf die ich hier besonders eingehen möchte, ist die, die weit über die älteren Frauen in jeder Kultur hinausgeht. Es ist eine Gefahr für jeden von uns. Paulus warnte davor, dass Christen nicht verleumderisch sein sollen.
Das Wort für verleumderisch ist dasselbe wie für „Teufel“. Wenn die älteren Frauen – oder irgendjemand sonst – lästern, dann tun sie das Werk des Teufels. Wenn wir Lügen über andere Menschen verbreiten, ist es so, als würden wir dem Teufel sagen: „Mach du mal eine Pause. Lass mich einen Teil deiner Arbeit machen.“ Wenn wir die Probleme und das Versagen anderer Leute dazu nutzen, um uns zu unterhalten, dann tun wir die Arbeit des Teufels.
Das gilt für jeden von uns, nicht nur für ältere Frauen. Jeder von uns sollte sich fest vornehmen, mit Gottes Hilfe, nur die Wahrheit über andere zu erzählen. Gut über andere zu reden. Und wenn wir über irgendeine Sünde oder einen Fehler im Leben eines anderen reden müssen, dann in Wahrheit, Liebe und Demut. Tue nicht das Werk des Teufels für ihn!
