How Do I Provide Heartfelt Applications In A Sermon?
Q: How do I approach sermon application that truly reaches the heart?
A: Every teacher has their strengths and weaknesses. No teacher is as great as Jesus was. If anyone was the perfect teacher, it was Jesus. I think that generally, I do a better job of explaining the truth than applying the truth. I'm not ashamed of my applicational ability, but I think you can find guys who do it better than I do.
What I would say is to make sure you give attention to application throughout your message, not just at the end. Reach application points as you go along. I am the author of the Enduring Word Study Bible, and one of the things we wanted to feature in the study notes was an emphasis on application. We have special application points scattered throughout the Bible, and I think those are very helpful for people.
Don't feel that you have to wait until the end of the message before you begin your application. It's important to integrate it throughout your teaching.
