Is It Acceptable To Give To Organizations Like The Salvation Army Instead Of The Church?
Q: Is it acceptable for me to give to organizations like the Salvation Army to support people in need instead of my church, especially when many churches seem focused on production over people?
A: We have a pattern biblically. I wouldn't say it's a command, but I would call it a pattern. The pattern is that we should support those who spiritually feed and support us. This is given to us in several different places in the Bible.
However, there's not a strict command that you must tithe to your local church. There is a pattern of making the ministries that feed you and support you spiritually a focus in your generosity.
It's also perfectly appropriate, if the Lord leads you, to express Christian generosity by giving to something like the Salvation Army, which is a good organization doing good work. You don't need to feel pressured to give to your church exclusively. Pray about it and do as you sense God leading you. Support reputable Christian ministries, but if their ministry is more focused on doing good in the community, that's not bad either. Just be open to supporting financially those ministries and works that feed you spiritually.
