How Can The Holy Spirit Be Clearly Explained?

Q: Can you provide a way to explain the Holy Spirit to a youth that I am part of a youth ministry and want to explain, but it’s deep to talk about. What’s your advice for this talking to youth about the Holy Spirit?

A: I would recommend that you read the words of Scripture and explain them as simply as you can. Read passages in the Bible that speak about the Holy Spirit and His work. Explain that we need the word of God and the Spirit of God working together in our life to come into maturity as Christians. I think it’s easier for people to relate to the subject of a father and a son, but when it comes to the Holy Spirit, it’s more difficult to conceptualize. We don’t need to try to visualize Him.

The Holy Spirit is a real person whose entire orientation is to be an influence in directing people to Jesus and to God. When God the Father wants to reveal Himself, He sends the Son. And when the Son wants to represent Himself, He sends the Spirit. It’s a constant interflow of the Trinity of putting the focus on one another. Even Jesus, in an analogy of the Holy Spirit, describes Him as being like the wind. You don’t see the wind, but you see the effects. So, teach your students what the Bible says about the Holy Spirit, but don’t try to conceptualize the Holy Spirit.
