Why Doesn’t The Bible Give A Physical Description Of Jesus Christ?

Q: Why do you think the Bible does not give us the physical description of Jesus Christ?

A: Because that isn't what we're supposed to focus on. The only physical description that we have of Jesus, which really isn't much of a description, says in Isaiah 53, that prophetic passage of the ultimate servant, that there is no form or comeliness in him that we should be attracted to him. This kind of indicates, if that's referring to his physical appearance, that Jesus looked normal. You wouldn't look at Jesus and say, 'What a handsome man.' He would just look like a normal person, or possibly even unattractive.

If you do want something of a physical description of Jesus, though, this is given to us in a little bit of symbolic language using some figures of speech in Revelation chapter 1. But that's not Jesus as he walked this earth. Remember what the Apostle Paul said: he said that we no longer know Jesus after the flesh. The apostles in the first century church understood that their relationship with Jesus was different after his death, resurrection, and ascension to heaven. They didn't try to relate to him the way they used to when he walked this earth, and that's what God wants for believers today.

Now, I will say, and I may be completely unqualified to say this, but years ago, when I looked into the Shroud of Turin, it does give some sort of physical resemblance. It aligns somewhat with the classical representation of what Jesus is thought by artists to look like. From the research I did several years ago, I did not find enough evidence to dismiss the Shroud of Turin. I can't say that it's genuine, but neither can I say that I know it's a fake. Anyone who's tried to demonstrate that it is a fake has failed in that. Again, that's not to say that it proves that it's real, but it does show that there's no proof that it's a fake.
