How Can We Incorporate Worship Into Family Life?

Q: Do you practice family worship, and if so, how would you recommend incorporating worship into family life?

A: David Guzik: Our family worship is our prayer time at the beginning of each day. Now, he may be talking about more of a morning devotional service together as a family. No, that hasn’t been our practice.

Inga-Lill Guzik: It’s a great idea, if you desire to do that. We have oftentimes celebrated communion as a family with our kids and grandkids, and that has been very meaningful. As a family, you can pursue that goal and develop it into a good thing that you do together.

David Guzik: I’ll be honest, we never really incorporated this into our family life when our kids were younger. But I have heard of people who have incorporated some kind of Scripture reading and discussion as part of their family mealtime. When our kids were growing up, I think we did a very good job of having dinner together as a family. I’ve heard from couples who have done that deliberately and added Scripture reading and discussion, and maybe a brief time of prayer as part of that family meal. It’s worked pretty well for them.

Inga-Lill Guzik: I grew up with my father doing evening devotions with us as kids. He would read us a kid’s devotional we would have a prayer time and questions before going to bed. We didn’t do it in the morning when everybody was getting ready to head out the door. Our evening devotions became a meaningful way of being together as a family. I think it’s a great goal to pursue and try different things, because that’s how things work.

David Guzik: Right, you’ve got to bring together the spiritual and then the practical. The practical has to work for your family as well.

Inga-Lill Guzik: And while it’s a good goal to eventually do that together every night now, maybe start out slow and build towards it. You want your family to have a desire for it and a hunger for it, too.
