How Can I Know My Calling?
Q: How can ordinary believers discern a genuine calling to ministry, especially when it is not as obvious as it was for the apostles?
A: Very practically, you pray about it. And then you try things. Maybe God has called you to minister to the children in their Sunday school classes. Try it and see if God’s blessing is on it. See if there is a blessing from the Spirit of God as you serve them in this way. Maybe there will be. Or maybe it’s some other form of ministry in the church or the community. Maybe there’s a rescue mission or a soup kitchen you are called to serve. My wife does a lot of amazing ministry. She’s on her way back from a dental mission down in Mexico right now. She wanted me to say thank you to those of you who prayed for this dental mission. It went really well. I can’t wait till she gets home and tells me the whole story. My wife also does is ministry with the women in our county jails.
Maybe it’s something like that. Try some different things and see what God’s hand of blessing and calling may be on. I would also encourage you not to be afraid to go after the things that have an appeal to you. Sometimes we think that God might only call us to things we don’t want to do. While that might be the case at times, I would first look for the calling of God in ministries where you can use your natural gifts and inclinations.
