Can You Recommend Devotional Readings For Mature Believers?
Q: Can you recommend a devotional for spiritually mature Christians, similar in depth to Experiencing God?
A: David Guzik: My favorite devotional is Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening. I’m a big Spurgeon fan. I’ve read thousands of Spurgeon sermons, so I think Morning and Evening is just wonderful.
Inga-Lill Guzik: My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers is another favorite, and it is super popular among many believers.
David Guzik: For couples, there is a book that we like to recommend to people. It’s called Spiritual Warfare in Marriageby Bill Stonebraker, and it really deals with the ins and outs of how the enemy attacks marriages and how you can safeguard against that. It’s a small paperback, and not really a devotional per se, but it’s definitely a helpful book in marriage.
Inga-Lill Guzik: Right, there are questions and answers included, but it’s not really a devotional. It’s great if you’re if you feel like you’re on the edge of things or you feel like you’re butting up against a wall constantly. David and I always discuss this when we have disagreements, which we do have every now and then. Asking each other, “Is this a relationship issue or a spiritual attack?” has saved our marriage from a lot of unnecessary hurt and pain.
David Guzik: There have been times in our marriage when we’ve been super slow to pick up on the idea that something is fundamentally a spiritual attack.
Inga-Lill Guzik: It has really helped. We come to a discussion saying, “Is this really something we need to work on, or do we have a strong sense that it’s spiritual attack?” Then, if we know it’s spiritual attack, we come against it in prayer, and we’re unified together against the enemy’s darts and wiles and lies.
