Can You Forgive Someone Who Has Already Died?
This is a painful and complex situation. While face-to-face forgiveness isn’t possible, Scripture offers a path forward. You can come to God, confess the sin of unforgiveness, ask the Lord for healing, and release that burden before Him. If you can’t forgive someone to their face, you can still forgive them before the face of God.
A Prayerful Path to Release Unforgiveness
Here’s what I would do in this situation. I would go to the Lord in earnest prayer—either alone or with a trusted believer. If I were the one struggling with unforgiveness, I would pray something like:
“Lord, please forgive me for the unforgiveness I held toward [name]. I now see that it was sin to hold onto that bitterness. Even though they’re no longer alive and I can’t speak to them directly, I can speak to You. I release this unforgiveness to You, Lord. I ask You to forgive me and heal my heart.”
Even when the person is gone, God is present. He hears, He heals, and He invites us to release what we cannot resolve face-to-face.
Helping Others Forgive Through Prayer
If someone needs help beginning this kind of prayer, it’s good and appropriate to walk with them through it. You can gently guide them in releasing unforgiveness to God and finding peace through His grace.
