Can Satan Read Our Minds?

Q: It’s my understanding that Satan can’t read your mind. If this is the case, how does he tempt you, lie to you, or put thoughts in your head?

A: I don’t know whether or not Satan can literally read our minds. Some people would argue that Satan does not have this ability, because they feel like it would be a violation of the principle of God’s omniscience, because only God is all-knowing. They say that if Satan could actually read our minds, it would violate that principle of God and who He is. I don’t know if I buy the idea that the principle of omniscience would be violated if Satan could, in fact, actually read our minds.

I need to back up just a little bit. When we say, “Satan this” and “Satan that,” we’re rarely talking about Lucifer or Satan, the specific angelic being who fell. We’re rarely talking about him. Usually, we’re talking about one of his representatives or agents. I just want to make that clear. When we talk about Satan tempting us, I doubt that there’s anybody listening to me right now who has actually been directly and personally tempted by Satan himself. It has happened through one of his representatives, one of the angels who fell along with him. We may use that way of speaking, but that’s what is going on when we talk about Satan tempting us.

Even if it’s true that Satan cannot read our minds, he is a thorough and reliable observer of who we are, and such a brilliant observer of human nature throughout generations that I think he can reasonably predict what we would think in a situation. I heard a guy express it in a clever way. He said, “Look, if my wife can read my mind, then I think the devil can too.” Now, he wasn’t drawing an analogy between his wife and the devil. Of course not. He was simply saying, “My wife knows me so well that she can often reliably predict my behavior, and it’s not a surprise if Satan can do the same thing.”

I can’t say for certain whether or not Satan can actually read our thoughts, but I can tell you this, he can virtually read our thoughts because he and his agents observe us so thoroughly. Demonic beings have so much experience in observing us that I think that they can, maybe not perfectly, but reliably, read our thoughts.
