Can believers watch movies with demonic characters?
My wife likes to watch movies. Some of these movies involve characters like Lucifer and his demons. Is it ok to watch them? She says, “It’s only a movie.”
First, I don’t think there is a universal answer for every Christian on this, saying what is permitted or prohibited for every Christian. I believe this is potentially an area of Christian liberty.
Secondly, this has to be a matter of your wife’s own discernment and conscience, since she’s saying it doesn’t bother her and it’s only a movie.
Thirdly, as the husband, you are the spiritual leader of your home. If you truly discern that this is something bad for your wife, and not appropriate in your home, then I think that you have an opportunity to lovingly show some leadership and just say, “Wife, I understand, but we’re not going to do this.”
Before doing that, take some time pray, get settled in your heart, and make sure that this isn’t just an overactive conscience on your part. But the bottom line is, God has said that you’re the spiritual leader of that home, and this would be something that potentially falls in your realm of spiritual leadership. If you have that real firm conviction in your heart from the Lord that this is not something the Lord wants in your home, then it would be an area where you can take the lead and decide for your family. It’s up to your wife whether or not she’s going to submit to that, but you can provide the leadership to give her the opportunity to submit to that direction.
Those are the three principles I would focus on. First, it’s not a universal thing that would apply to every believer. Secondly, her own conscience within. Thirdly, your position as the leader of the home.
