Were Adam And Eve Forgiven?

Q: Were Adam and Eve forgiven? It seems that they did not show any remorse or ask for forgiveness.

A: I do believe that Adam and Eve were forgiven. When they sinned and hid from God, covering themselves with fig leaves, that was completely inadequate. Their way of dealing with their sin and shame was insufficient. After God dealt with their sin by bringing a curse upon Satan, the woman, and the man, He also promised a coming redeemer. God clothed them in the skins of animals, which signifies that an animal had to die so that Adam and Eve could be properly covered.

Their nakedness was covered, and this is God's demonstration to us that we will see Adam and Eve in heaven. They were sorry for their sin. Their shame and remorse are evident in their hiding from God. While we don't see a proper confession of faith or a declaration of repentance, we do see their sorrow and shame over their sin. More importantly, we see God's gracious provision for Adam and Eve by covering them with the skins of animals. This act points forward not only to the sacrificial system in general but also to the perfect sacrifice, Jesus Christ, and what He would accomplish on the cross so that His people would not be naked and ashamed, but covered before the Lord.
