How Can We Guard Against Idolizing Modern Christian Leaders?
Q: In Acts 14, the locals of Lystra treated Paul and Barnabas like gods. How should I guard against worshiping my theological heroes in a similar way?
A: Just remember that we're all knuckleheads. We have a tendency to think that the person who stands in front of others and talks about God's word is somehow holier or greater than he really is. This is a common misconception.
In our pastoral work, we've experienced this dynamic. People often elevate leaders in their minds, but we know the truth about ourselves. Our wives certainly aren't fooled by that perception. It's important to keep it real and push against that tendency to idolize.
Ultimately, we need to remember that no matter how much someone may be used by God, they are still just people. We should appreciate and respect our leaders, but we must also recognize their humanity and avoid placing them on a pedestal.
