Is It Biblical To “Decree and Declare”?
Q: Should believers “decree and declare”? My aunt declared that my mom would be healed. Something doesn’t sit right with my spirit.
A: No. The popular understanding of “decree and declare” is very wrong. It treats God as if He were our servant instead of us being His servants. Now, I will say there is something biblical behind the idea of decreeing and declaring, and that is a demonstration of faith. But the way that the whole process is generally used and approached in the present day is unbiblical. It’s treating God as if He were your servant, instead of you being the servant of God.
You say, “My aunt declared that my mom would be healed, something doesn’t sit right with my spirit.” I’ve seen similar things. I’ve seen times when people have been declared healed by the power of Jesus, and then a short time later, they died of cancer. I don’t blame the person who made the declaration for their death. They’re certainly not responsible for that. But I do blame the person who made that declaration for not going back to that widow and saying, “I’m so sorry. I was wrong. I presumptuously believed not only that your husband would be healed, but that he was healed at the moment I declared it, and it was not so.” You’re right in having this hesitancy. I pray that the Lord guides you in and through that.
