Are Jesus And The Bible Equivalent?
Q: Are “the Word of God” as Scripture and “the Word of God” as Jesus the same? Are the Scriptures eternal and uncreated in the same sense as Christ?
A: No, I wouldn’t put it that way. First, are the Scriptures eternal? Well, no, the Scriptures are not eternal regarding eternity past. The Scriptures are eternal in the sense that they will never pass away, as Jesus said, but they’re not eternal like God is, before eternity past. It’s the same way that we say people are eternal; we don’t mean that we have an eternal past, but we have an eternal future. And I would say the same is true for God’s word, for the Scripture itself.
Secondly, are the word of God (the Scriptures), and the Word of God (Jesus) the same? The best way I would answer that is to say, kind of. They’re kind of the same in that Jesus is the Word. He is the Word incarnate. He is the Word of God with flesh put on Him. So, yes; however, there is a difference between the writings of the Scripture and the Author of the Scripture, Jesus Himself. Jesus is the Author. We benefit from His writings. In that sense, there is a difference between the two.
