What Are Your Thoughts On The Screwtape Letters By CS Lewis?
Q: Have you read The Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis, and what are your thoughts on it?
A: I think Screwtape Letters is a wonderful and delightful book. It was written by the famous British writer, CS Lewis, who was not only a great literary man, but he was also a very wise and helpful Christian. He was a man who had a real Christian life and a real Christian testimony, and he knew how to discuss the Bible and theological things in a very persuasive and appealing way.
I wouldn’t say that I agree with absolutely everything in CS Lewis’s theology, but on many points, he stated things very well. He wrote a book called The Screwtape Letters, which obviously was a book of fiction, and was written according to the standpoint of a senior devil who was supervising and training a junior devil named Wormwood in how to tempt and do damage in the life of a particular man. In the story, the man becomes a Christian, and these two devils discuss how we’re going to deal with that. The book is written from the viewpoint and in the verbiage of the senior devil. CS Lewis really does kind of give a lot of insight into how he thinks devils may think and attack us and approach us. And some of it has a biblical foundation, while other parts of it are just from human observation. But it’s a good book. I recommend it. Just understand that this is not actual correspondence that CS Lewis has obtained from a senior devil to a junior devil, but rather it’s just a fiction book, but based on that literary premise.
