Are Miscarriages A Curse From God?
Are miscarriages a curse from God? I’m just trying to understand why it happens to believers, if the Bible says children are gifts from God for the righteous.
Psalm 127:3-5 – Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them; they shall not be ashamed, but shall speak with their enemies in the gate.
I don’t know if this miscarriage this question is theoretical or something you or a loved one have personally endured. But before I say anything else, let me express my sympathy and sorrow to you. That’s a very rough thing to experience. I’m going to pray for you, and I hope that others will remember to lift you up in prayer.
Are miscarriages a curse from God? Well, they can be. You referenced Psalm 127:3-5, which tells us that children are a blessing from the Lord. In some cases, maybe God is bringing His discipline or judgment upon a person and not allowing them the blessing of having children. I do believe that there could be times and places where that is the case, where God is disciplining one of His children, or bringing some kind of judgment upon those who are outside His family. A miscarriage could be part of it.
However, we also have to acknowledge that there can also be direct medical or biological reasons why a miscarriage could happen. I would assume that the majority of miscarriages happen for simple biological reasons. Someone might ask, “Well, David, why does God allow such things?” God does allow it, but we need to understand that God has created a world which generally operates under the principle of cause and effect. Therefore, if a woman in her pregnancy is severely deficient in a certain kind of hormone or other nutrient in her body, that could lead to a miscarriage. Why? Because God has put us in a world that generally operates under the principle of cause and effect.
We can’t say, “Lord suspend the laws of cause and effect, whenever they might be unfavorable towards me” and expect it to happen. But there are certainly some Christians who seem to think that way. I don’t think that’s how we are to live.
While it is possible that God may be working discipline, in the sense of correction, or judgment in the case of those who are not believers, it is not necessarily so. So, we need to be cautious in this. I would be very cautious in saying that God had nothing to do with a miscarriage. But I would be even more cautious in saying, “Well, this is God’s work against you.” No. Instead of trying to figure all that out, let’s sit back and just love the person and bring them the comfort and love of Jesus Christ.
